Roe Swanson

Associate Media Director

How I started in this business:

When I was younger, I was interested in becoming a copywriter, so I completed a degree in marketing. Through college, I worked for UPS. When I graduated, they brought me on full-time and I did their accounting work. Once, when I was taking a night class, I ran into someone from high school who worked in media at J. Walter Thompson. After we talked, I decided I wanted to do the same and ended up accepting a media job on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago.

What I like most about my job:

I really like advertising because I know it truly impacts people. It works. You can create awareness. You can educate. You can persuade people. I really enjoy that.

When I’m not at work:

I love the theatre and going to plays. In the summer, I like to be outside. I golf and spend any time I can on a boat.

Best advice I ever received:

They say KISS, or “keep it simple, stupid” and I think that applies to everything because you want to keep things simple when you’re communicating with people.

If I weren’t doing this:

I’d probably be a stockbroker, financial planner, or something similar. Again, I want to be working with figures, looking for good deals, and trying to help people.

To me, Positively Engaging Marketing means:

Getting people involved and making lives better.
