Cathy Looze

How I started in this business…

I got a degree in marketing research, found a job at an advertising agency and that’s it. They said since I had research experience, I probably would do well in media. So, they put me in the media department and that’s where I’ve been for the last 20-some years.

What I like most about my job…

I’m a little bit inquisitive so I like learning and figuring out why people do what they do. And I like to spend money. When you’re in media, you spend money, but you’re spending it intelligently and saving as much as you can while getting as much as you can. I also like that every day is different. My opinion is that everybody in advertising has a little bit of A.D.D. and we constantly need change to keep us excited, fresh, and interested.

When I’m not at work…

I’m in my kitchen making something. I like to bake; I like to cook. I just like to experiment in the kitchen.

Best advice I ever received…

“Don’t take everything too seriously.” Advertising is not brain surgery. Our job is to do the best we can for our clients, but realize that it’s not life or death. We’re not curing cancer here. We are trying to convince people to change their behavior or buy a product.

If I weren’t doing this…

I would have gone to the Culinary Institute and gotten a degree as a chef so I could work in a restaurant, be a baker, or do something involving food.

To me, Positively Engaging Marketing means…

First, there’s the “engagement” part. We want people to connect and for our advertising messages to resonate with our customers. The “positive” part means we want to improve their lives. So, we work with our clients to help find ways to better the lives of their audiences.
